Our
Story

Origins

After participating in the 1968 Milan Triennale, organized that year by the noted urbanist Giancarlo de Carlo, Mary Otis Stevens and Thomas F. McNulty were inspired to found iPress.

Associating with the NY Publisher George Braziller they brought out (1969-1974) five books in the iPress series on the human environment:

The Ideal Communist City, by Alexei Gutnov et al;

World of Variation by Mary Otis Stevens and Thomas F. McNulty;

Towards a Non-Oppressive Environment by Alexander Tzonis;

Playing Urban Games by Martin Kuenzlen;

From Tipi to Skyscraper by Doris Cole.

Each book used architecture and urban design tools to explore dysfunctional societal practices in a global context and suggest humane and sustainable alternatives.

Current

After a long hiatus, when societal conditions had not changed - in fact had worsened since the 1960's, iPress team members decided by consensus to republish the original five books with updates and new commentaries.

Since 2020, four of the five original iPress books are in the process of being reissued in new editions.

Organization

Members of the iPress team are from different cultures and backgrounds and contribute to the diversity of topics and approaches societal issues.
